Back in 2001/2002/2003 I have seen many friends having to return to India (from the bay area) because they could not get another job. All the desi consulting companies that everyone bashes so often? they are the saviours. They are typically the only ones who hire in those times. All the big companies will have hiring freeze's and massive layoffs.
Its already started in the US (Sprint:4k, Lehman Bros 1300, Motorola 7500+1600, applied-materials 1000) but this is the mere tip of the iceberg.

Most probably this time its going to take much longer than 2001/2002 to recover. Back then the dollar was strong, there was a huge fiscal surplus and inflation was not a risk. This time none of those things are there and stimulating the economy is going to take much much longer. Also, to an extent in 2001/2002 it was only tech that imploded. The rest of the economy (& consumers by extension who are the main drivers of the economy) was ok. This time its widespread, consumers across the board are hit.
The July VB was a huge blessing in disguise for lots and lots of people who will be able to maintain status even if they are jobless for a few months. Back in 2001/2002/2003 the option was to be out-of-status of return home. Many chose the latter. This time they can atleast get a job offer from a desi consulting company and keep looking for some consulting gig.

The last point depends on the university. Many accept EAD as sufficient for qualifying as an in-state resident for tuition purposes.
At least, one I am in contact with does.

Great topic. wating one more year would mean 12 more months of rent. so even if the house depreciates it would break even considering the lost rent. This is just my opinion assuming that the depreciation would be less than 5-10% till next summer. Experts please list out the hidden costs involved in mortgage for new home buyers to be careful about.

This is important information. Is it really true that a company laying off an H1 employee is under the obligation to buy all his household stuff, car, apartment lease etc.? If this is correct, we must share this information with others. In this economy lots of H1 guys are getting laid off. Many are selling their cars at distress values. They can benefit from this information.

Who gets FP notice? is it attorney or us?
We also filed on July 2nd at NSC.. got EAD and AP. buit no sign of FP yet. we were also out of country for last 3- 4 weeks. Is there chance we could have missed it?

Its been more than 30 days since i mailed my application and checks are not cashed yet.
I called the uscis support center last week and was told to wait.
Not sure how long this is going to take.
Anyone have suggestions, my ead expires 07/15.

It makes no difference whether they allow concurrent filing of 140/485 or not IF YOUR EMPLOYER IS WILLING to pay extra premium processing for 140. IF not , it makes minimal difference (2-3 months delay). Earlier this year, people were getting 140 approved on 6-8 weeks on average without premium fee.
If your date is not current:
This rule makes 0 difference. File 140 and wait for approval while your date moves forward. Once its current, file 485. So everyone who is retrogressed, this rule makes no difference to you 485 filing and getting EAD/AP.
If your date is current: File 140, regular processing 2-3 months and then file 485. If you can get premium processing done then it would be 15 days and then file 485. Either ways, you are delay in filing 485 by 2-3 months. In the grand scheme of things, its negligible. It would take even 2 months for your lawyer to get the paperwork straight for filing 485.
So please relax, this new rule that does not allow concurrent filing of 485 and 140 is not earth-shattering. Its a revenue generation move. And its good as long as revenue stays in USCIS as they do need revenue to hire more people to process files faster, which is in our own benefit. The only problem we have is the rise in fees generates revenue which often times does not stay with USCIS and goes away to other agencies of DHS(I think, this was mentioned in CIS Ombudsman report, if I am not wrong).
SO if USCIS wants to make a new rule of filing I485 for the one whose I 140 is cleared and priority date is not current, It CAN DO That RULE Right?
We do not need any Congress approval for that Right?

I know of a company which will keep $2 + 10% for payroll taxes. A lot better than the one above.
There is so much competetion in this space that people have reduced their margins to next to nothing.

A few question related to the database:
1) Is the received date the same as the date the labor was filed (in other words, the priority date)
2) The 2005 and after database structure does not have employee name, and there are multiple records found on "prioirty" date, is there any other field that can be verified from other documents like the case number etc? How to nail down to exact record for me?
3) Is the SOC code the same as what we should be looking for "same or similar" job?
4) Assuming answer to above Q is yes, from where can we find detailed job duties for these codes?

I have been feeling sad that I have not been able to make it to the rally and after hearing about the energy, the camaraderie and the excitement you all shared I know for sure I missed out on a once in a life time oppurtunity, there will always be that sadness in me, the only comfort I have is that I tried to contribute in ways other than attending the rally.
But I am very glad that this turned out be such a resounding success.
